I had a grandma who was a powerhouse of a person. Someone smart as a whip and remarkably kind. She married a man who soared to prominence, and despite his best efforts, was often cast in his shadow.

But it was Maudine who made things happen. She was the one who brought people together and pushed those she loved to greater things as a community. As a kid, I was lucky to find myself along for the ride; and in the magic of it all, I’d hear my grandpa’s wonder-filled voice say, “Look what Maud wrought.”

This is her legacy.
